The Walter E. Washington Convention Center in Washington, D.C., recently hosted what it says was the largest-known banquet-style dinner in the history of conventions worldwide. The dinner, organized by the Chicago-based and Howard University-founded Alpha Kappa Alpha (AKA) sorority in commemoration of its centennial anniversary, drew more than 17,600 guests.

Capitol Hill was a sea of pink and green Thursday as members of Alpha Kappa Alpha celebrated the sorority's centennial anniversary last week. Also known as AKA, AlphaKappa Alpha is the nation's oldest black greek sorority,and was founded in Washington in 1908 at Howard University.

A sea of pink and green descended upon the Capitol this month, as more than 23,000 members of the world's oldest, predominately African-American sorority celebrated their 100th birthday.

All week long the District is playing host to a big birthday bash. The nation's first black sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha, is celebrating its 100 anniversary. It was founded at Howard University in 1908. The sorority joined eight other black Greek organizations for a unity march on the Capitol.

By 7:30 in the morning, nearly 1,000 ladies began their fitness walk around the Walter E. Washington Convention Center. Many wore pink sweat pants with a double row of green piping. Some wore dark green Converse tennis shoes with a salmon pink toe. There were those so devoted to the Alpha Kappa Alpha theme -- Economics, Service and Partnerships -- in honor of the sorority's 100th anniversary that they walked with a bit of attitude, swaying and chanting.
